Realignment of USCIS

1.12.2010 -

The Director of USCIS, Alejandro Mayorkas, recently announced the realignment of the Services organizational structure. Mr. Mayorkas stated that the goal of USCIS is to achieve greater efficiency. Specifically, the Service plans to:

  • Create a Fraud Detection and National Security Directorate to better address anti-fraud and national security;
  • Create a new Customer Service Directorate in order to provide better customer service.; and
  • Divide the existing Domestic Operations Directorate into two separate directorates, Service Center Operations and Field Operations.

As national security has been closely scrutinized since the attempted airline attack on December 25th, DHS, USCIS are other agencies responsible for national security are re-evaluating their internal protocols and looking for means of improving processes wherever possible.

In light of this increased scrutiny, it is likely that traveling in and out of the U.S. will become increasingly difficult as security will continue to tighten both in the U.S. and around the world. As such, it is imperative to carefully prepare for any travel to minimize the disruption that can be caused by a delay in entering or exiting a country.
